The Pilot Studies Core provides start-up funds for new, innovative pilot studies that contribute to our understanding of HIV/AIDS among Latino populations in the Miami-Dade area. A major emphasis of the Pilot Studies Core is to pair a junior investigator with a senior investigator to provide expert senior level mentorship as well as modest research funding for new investigators who show clear aptitude for a career in HIV/AIDS research Based upon an internal peer review system, three junior faculty members from CHUA or the Departments of Psychology and Sociology/Anthropology at FIU will be selected each year to conduct one-year pilot study projects. These pilot projects are likely to contribute important new knowledge concerning HIV/AIDS among Latinos and may lead to extramural research funding. Pilot studies grants are likely to serve as catalysts for important new collaborations (with whom?).
